I have to be there often for my appointments and to pick up medications and so there is a *lot* of waiting around in situations where it’s easy to get pretty depressed. I am fighting this situation by cheering up myself and others with Operation Beautiful-type notes. Some of these are in the bathrooms and some are on the notice boards which dot the hospital, I also slip lots of notes between the pages of the magazines in the waiting rooms. Because these are all spaces where there are approximately equal numbers of men and women, all of whom need cheering up, I mostly stick to gender-neutral language instead of the word “beautiful” which seems very female-oriented to me. There are so many different notes that I can write that this isn’t a problem though! I went back for an appointment yesterday and didn’t have any time to put new notes up but I checked out the sites of notes I’d put up several weeks ago and was very cheered to find almost all of them were still visible! There’s generally quite a high turnover of things on the noticeboards so people must have specifically avoided covering them up, which made me smile.”
